hyde. park.

today i visited Hyde Park for my London Walks class. i went with several girls from the program and we had a great time. the weather was fantastic so we were able to take our time and enjoy the park.

this is marble arch. i actually came here a few days ago with rupert, but it was fun to see it again. it was originally designed as a monument marking the royal entrance to Buckingham, but because it was too narrow for the royal coaches it was moved to hyde park. i thought it was so interesting that today only senior members of the royal family and artillery can pass beneath it! Near the arch was the Tyburn gallows where criminals were hanged. it was absolutely gruesome what they did to people! They would hang the victim until they were nearly dead and then disembowell and burn his entrails while he watched! then they would tie horses to the victims arms and legs and send them in various directions to divide the body in quarters. so gross.

here is the famous speakers corner. mormon missionaries used to be 'initiated' into the mission by joining orators and hecklers to address religion here.

here is all of us girls in front of a statue in hyde park and our feet along the Diana Princess of Wales walk!
this is the statue of achilles. this honors the Duke of Wellington- who i talked about in my post yesterday. (defeated Napoleon at Waterloo)

The Duke of Wellington's house- called the apsley house

Wellington Arch- Britain's version of "the arc de triomphe in paris" it was beautiful.

We strolled along Rotten Row and enjoyed the amazing spring blossoms and sunny weather!
